Privacy Policy

This page explains what information Cam2Cam.io handles when you use it at cam2cam.io in any browser, why, who else receives it, and what you can ask us to do with it.

Information we handle

No form stands between you and your first cam2cam chat. Information is still involved, though. We open a guest account for you quietly so that matching works, and your browser hands over the same technical details it gives every site you visit. The table sorts it all into eight groups.

CategoryExamplesWhere it comes from
Session and deviceThe guest account made for you on arrival, plus what any browser reveals: device model, operating system, browser name, a device ID, network details and IP addressSent automatically by your browser
Approximate locationA city-level guess based on IP address. Anything more exact only if your device settings allow itAutomatic, or by your permission
Account detailsIf you register: email, username, display name, password. Optional: avatar, bio, birthday, genderTyped in by you
Sign-in with another serviceTypically the name, email and profile photo that Google, Apple or a similar provider passes on when you approve itThat provider, once you approve
ActivityWhich pages and features you open, what you tap, how long you stay, which page sent you here, and server-side access logsLogged automatically
What you sendMessages to other members, reports you submit, emails to our support addressSent by you
Camera stillsFace-check results taken from frames of your own camera, sometimes with the frame itself (explained below)Your camera, during matching and calls
PaymentsBilling information and a log of each purchase. Full card numbers never reach usYou and the payment company

Your browser, not us, asks for the camera and microphone, and it does so once you reach the matching screen. You can take that permission back in the browser whenever you want. During a call, audio and video are relayed between the two of you by a real-time video provider; relaying the stream is the only way it can reach the other side.

Camera stills used for safety checks

One use of your camera happens alongside the call rather than as part of it, so we spell it out separately. On the matching screen, and throughout a call, Cam2Cam.io may capture a single still image from your own camera at intervals. Your browser runs face detection on it locally and reports the outcome to us: the face count, the size and sharpness of the face, the image brightness, and the match or call the image belongs to. Under some of our settings the image is uploaded too. We control how often stills are taken and whether they are uploaded, and those settings can change with no visible difference on screen.

The purpose is safety, and nothing else. Stills let us check that a live person sits in front of the camera, not an empty frame or a printed photo, and help us spot cameras pointed at things the other person never consented to see. Other members never see them. They are not attached to your profile, play no part in who you are matched with, and are not used to train any software.

What the information is for

  1. Operating the site: matching, calls, messaging, payments and any feature you switch on.
  2. Personalisation: suggested matches and content, and remembering how you like the interface.
  3. Communication: service announcements, plus replies when you write in.
  4. Safety: catching fraud, abuse and rule-breaking, the camera checks included.
  5. Development: learning how the site gets used, fixing faults, adding features.
  6. Legal compliance: obeying the law, enforcing the terms, protecting members and the public.

We use Google Analytics to understand usage. It only runs if you accept it in the cookie banner, and analytics partners may pass us statistics that are aggregated or anonymised. For cookies and browser storage, see the cookie policy.

Sharing

Personal information is never sold. It only goes outside Cam2Cam.io in five cases:

  • you instruct us to share it;
  • companies that help keep the site running (hosting, delivery networks, payments, analytics, support software) need it, and they are bound to keep it confidential;
  • the law, a court, a regulator or a government body demands it, or sharing it is necessary to protect Cam2Cam.io, its members or the public;
  • all or part of the business is merged, bought, restructured or sold;
  • it has been combined or anonymised so that it cannot reasonably point back to you.

Sign-in screens run by other companies, payment pages and external links follow their own privacy rules, not this page.

Public and private parts of your account

Nickname, display name, avatar, public profile, and posts, videos or comments you choose to publish are visible by design. Other people can look at them and pass them on, and search engines can index them. Delete them whenever you wish; just be aware that copies held by search engines and similar services can take a while to disappear.

Email address and phone number are never shown to other members; we use them to verify the account, keep it secure and get in touch with you. Passwords are encrypted before storage, so no one here can read yours.

Retention

We hold information for as long as your account exists. After that we keep it only where running the service, settling disputes, enforcing agreements or legal duties call for it. Closing your account sets deletion in motion: personal data is removed or anonymised over time, except anything the law requires us to retain. Camera stills and the face-check data attached to them are treated as safety records and held only while handling reports, preventing abuse or a legal duty needs them. Public posts that others have already seen or replied to can stay in anonymised form, and tax, legal or regulatory rules may oblige us to keep certain records longer.

Requests you can make

Subject to the law where you live, you may ask for a copy of your data, for corrections, for deletion (minus anything we must legally keep), for an export in a machine-readable file, or for limits on how parts of it are used.

To stop marketing emails, use the unsubscribe link inside one or change your notification settings. For any other request, email [email protected]. Replies come within a reasonable period and in line with your local law.

Keeping data secure

Encryption protects data both while it travels and where it is stored. Access is limited and needs authentication, the infrastructure follows industry standards, and security gets reviewed and tested on a regular basis. Still, nothing transmitted or stored online can be guaranteed safe. Your own best defence is a strong, unique password.

Children

Nobody under 18, or under a higher age set by local law, may use Cam2Cam.io. We never knowingly gather information about younger people, and any such information we find gets deleted promptly. If you believe a child has given us their details, let us know and read the child safety page.

Updates to this policy

New practices, technology or legal requirements mean this policy will change from time to time. Material changes get a new date on this page and advance notice on the site or by email. If you carry on using Cam2Cam.io once a change is in force, you are accepting the revised policy. Send privacy questions to the address on the contact page.
